This innovation, reminiscent of the 'X-factor' era of BBL|10 and |11, promises to revolutionize the sport by introducing an extra layer of tactical depth and flexibility.
Here's how it works: before the bat flip, teams can select one player as the designated batter. This player can step up to the plate but won't be allowed to field or bowl. And here's where it gets interesting: if a designated batter is chosen, teams must also pick a designated fielder. This fielder can't bowl but can take on the crucial wicketkeeping duties.
But wait, there's more! If a team decides against nominating a designated batter, they'll stick with the traditional playing XI. This rule, coming into play from the very first match of BBL|16, adds a whole new dimension to team selection and strategy.

The designated batter rule shares similarities with the Indian Premier League's 'impact player' rule introduced in 2023, which allows one of five substitutes to enter the game at any time. Trent Woodhill, the league's player acquisition consultant, believes this rule will be a game-changer: "It adds a new level of strategic thinking for coaches and teams. Global player feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we expect it to attract top talent for the upcoming season."
This rule could be a career-extender for seasoned batters like Chris Lynn and Travis Head, offering better player management. Moreover, the designated fielder role can be filled by a wicketkeeper, allowing teams to extend their batting order with a non-batting specialist. This strategy could have benefited teams like Perth Scorchers this season, who had to rely on part-time keeper Finn Allen in Josh Inglis' absence.
The rule also opens doors for veteran keepers like Matthew Wade to focus solely on batting, without the physical demands of wicketkeeping.
