A captivating photograph of a celebrated code breaker from Worcestershire has been recognized among the top selections in a prestigious photography contest. This striking image of Charlotte "Betty" Webb is included in the collection of 100 winners announced by the British Journal of Photography for their esteemed Portrait of Britain Awards.
The talented photographer, Karsten Thomaehlen, captured this portrait at Webb's residence in Wythall, just before her passing at the remarkable age of 101 in 2025. This collection of winning photographs will soon be showcased on large outdoor screens throughout the nation, ensuring that these compelling images reach a wide audience.
In addition to Webb's portrait, other remarkable entries have also been highlighted. For instance, photographer Lloyd Wright shared his winning image of factory worker Lisa, taken in Smethwick. He remarked on her surprised expression, saying, "I loved the way she held herself." He noted that her demeanor seemed timeless against the backdrop of the old factory, where she was one of the few to don traditional machinist jackets, embodying an effortless authenticity.
Another notable entry came from Anupama Gamanagari, who took a poignant portrait of her mother, a woman who migrated to the UK over two decades ago. At 77 years old, her mother exemplifies resilience and grace, carrying the weight of her migration experience with dignity. The portrait, captured during a walk in the picturesque Staffordshire countryside, symbolizes the intersection of memory, strength, and a sense of belonging. Gamanagari emphasized, "She's not a visitor in this landscape; she belongs here."
Worcestershire-based photographer John Boaz contributed a portrait of a Western rider and model named Benjamin, which is part of a broader project aimed at illustrating the diverse expressions of Christianity across Britain.
All 200 shortlisted photographs will be featured in the eighth volume of the Portrait of Britain book series, while the 100 winning images will be prominently displayed on digital advertising screens located in high streets, shopping centers, and transportation hubs around the country.
