A recent alert from the Truckee Police Department regarding a lone wolf spotted near the town has sparked a wave of concern among some residents in Nevada County. This notification quickly gained traction on social media, resulting in an impressive surge of comments and shares exceeding a thousand.
Wildlife experts want to emphasize that wolves in California are critically endangered, making it illegal to hunt or harm them. In this particular instance, the wolf was equipped with a GPS collar, allowing it to be tracked via the state's dedicated wolf tracker website.
Tracking California's limited yet slowly increasing wolf population presents challenges. One key method used by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife involves equipping individual wolves with collars to monitor their movements effectively.
"We typically have between 10 and 15 collars active at any moment," shared Axel Hunnicutt, the gray wolf coordinator for the department.
On a recent Sunday, Truckee police issued a "situational alert" on Facebook after detecting the collar signal of a lone wolf just north of the town. Hunnicutt reassured the community that such sightings are neither alarming nor unexpected.
"This time of year is when we generally expect wolves to disperse," he explained.
During the winter months, particularly around Valentine’s Day, young wolves often venture out from their packs in search of mates and new territories.
"As these one-to-two-year-old wolves explore, they can cover large distances," noted Susan Dewer, the president and founder of the California Wolf Foundation.
In this case, the wolf lingered near Truckee briefly before traveling approximately 15 to 20 miles east into Nevada overnight. Dewer, who collaborates closely with ranchers on managing potential wolf-livestock conflicts, mentioned that such movement is quite normal.
"If this wolf hadn’t been wearing a collar, it probably would have gone unnoticed," she said.
The ability to detect this wolf was made possible through the recently launched wolf tracking website by Fish and Wildlife. Hunnicutt explained that the site aims to assist ranchers and livestock producers in understanding the whereabouts of wolves, enabling them to take preventative measures against potential conflicts.
While wolves are apex predators, Hunnicutt pointed out that fatal attacks on humans are exceedingly rare, with only a handful occurring across North America in the last century. However, he stresses the importance of taking general precautions when outdoors.
"People should adopt the same safety measures they would in any wild environment where large animals might be present," Hunnicutt advised.
Similar to guidelines for bear encounters, experts recommend not leaving food outdoors, keeping dogs on leashes, avoiding leaving pets outside unsupervised, and being particularly cautious when hiking or walking alone during dawn or dusk hours.
