Just as the new season is about to kick off, a bold move has shaken the rugby world: Championship club Midlands Hurricanes have announced a sudden relocation to a new stadium, leaving fans and critics alike buzzing with questions. But here's where it gets intriguing—this isn’t just a change of address; it’s a strategic leap into the heart of a thriving rugby community. And this is the part most people miss: the club has signed a 20-year lease at Avery Fields in Bearwood, Birmingham, a venue they believe will better align with their long-term vision—a vision that goes beyond the field to foster grassroots rugby and community engagement.
Originally slated to play at the 2022 Commonwealth Games site, the Hurricanes have instead opted for a location that places them squarely within a rugby-rich environment, sharing space with Bournville RFC. This partnership, according to Midlands chair Mike Lomas, is a game-changer. “The move to Avery Fields cements rugby league in Birmingham for another two decades,” he stated. “It unites a rugby league club and a rugby union club with a shared mission: to get more young people playing rugby. This is a truly exciting development.” Lomas also extended gratitude to Bournville’s Alistair, Phil, and Siggers, as well as Birmingham City Council and the Alexander Stadium team, for their unwavering support.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Is this move a step backward, or a forward-thinking strategy? Midlands MD Eorl Crabtree is quick to address this. “This is not a backward step,” he emphasized. “It’s a smart, ambitious move that positions us for growth. Avery Fields gives us a sustainable home we can shape and develop, enhancing the matchday experience for our supporters while embedding us in a vibrant rugby community. Most importantly, it allows us to grow rugby league in the Midlands and connect deeply with the communities we represent.”
The relocation comes just in time for the Hurricanes’ debut in the Championship, with their first game at Avery Fields scheduled for next Sunday against Newcastle Thunder. As the club embarks on this new chapter, one question lingers: Will this move solidify their place in rugby history, or will it spark unforeseen challenges? What do you think?
