MotoGP: A Season of Frustrating Spin or a Much-Anticipated Shake-Up?

The MotoGP world is on the brink of a significant transformation, but will it be enough to spice up the upcoming season?

The sport is set to undergo a series of rule changes at the end of this year, which will have a profound impact on the grid. These changes include a pushback against the dominance of aerodynamics, the removal of ride height devices, a reduction in engine capacity, and a switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres. However, with these modifications still 44 races away, the 2026 season is likely to mirror the recent past, where Marc Marquez dominated almost unopposed.

The reasons for this are multifaceted. Firstly, the current focus on aerodynamics has significantly reduced the likelihood of close battles and multiple overtakes per lap. The wings create dirty air, making it difficult for riders to follow closely behind other bikes. While not as dramatic as Formula 1's issues, the wings' impact on braking stability has arguably made the sport more reliant on machine than rider, making it harder to overtake.

Secondly, the ride height devices, particularly the rear ones, have taken away rider control at corner exits, allowing riders to lock the rear suspension and accelerate smoothly. This further complicates overtaking, as it reduces the possibility of setting up a move on the brakes at the next corner.

The biggest factor, however, is the tyres. Michelin's front tyre pressure and temperature problems are well-known, a direct result of the bike's modifications and the development gap between the bike and tyre technology. This has led to quick tyre overload during races, and the introduction of a minimum pressure rule has not solved the issue. Michelin's failure to introduce a new front tyre, which was developed to fix this problem, further exacerbates the situation.

So, what does this mean for the upcoming season? We can expect more processions than overtakes, as riders will be more cautious about pushing the tyres to their limits. The 2027 season, with its bike shake-up, can't come soon enough for those seeking a more exciting spectacle.
