In an extraordinary and heartwarming event, twin mountain gorillas have been born in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, marking a significant moment for the endangered species, as highlighted by conservationists at Virunga National Park.
The community trackers, who are dedicated to monitoring these magnificent creatures, reported a delightful sight on Saturday: 22-year-old Mafuko tenderly cradling her newborn sons. The initial observations indicate that both the mother and her two little ones are in good health, which is promising given the challenges that come with their rare birth.
It's important to note that twin births among mountain gorillas occur in only about 1% of all recorded gorilla births, although precise statistics can be hard to come by.
Virunga National Park holds the distinction of being Africa's oldest and largest national park, established a century ago with the primary goal of safeguarding mountain gorillas, whose population has dwindled to fewer than 1,100 individuals in the wild today. These remarkable primates are found exclusively in Virunga and in national parks across the borders in Rwanda and Uganda, as documented by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which maintains a Red List cataloging threatened species.
The last occurrence of twin mountain gorillas in Virunga was in September 2020, which adds to the excitement of this recent birth. Interestingly, Mafuko herself had previously given birth to twins in 2016, but tragically, they both passed away within a week.
In the wild, young gorillas are heavily reliant on their mothers for care and mobility. This dependency makes them particularly vulnerable in an environment where threats from poachers and various armed groups are ever-present. To address this precarious situation, park authorities are implementing enhanced monitoring and protective measures to secure the twins' well-being at this critical stage of their lives. Rangers will be closely observing the family, ready to offer assistance if necessary.
Typically, a gorilla's gestation period lasts around eight-and-a-half months, and females usually give birth to one infant every four years. Mafuko has shown remarkable resilience throughout her life. Born into the Kabirizi family in 2003, she faced tragedy early on when she lost her mother to armed attackers at just four years old. At the age of ten, she joined the Bageni family and has since become a mother five times.
Conservationists working in Virunga, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, regard Mafuko's recent twins as a vital contribution to ongoing efforts aimed at preserving this endangered species. Thanks to a combination of anti-poaching patrols and community involvement initiatives, supported by organizations like the European Union and UNESCO, the population of mountain gorillas in Virunga has seen a gradual increase over the last decade. This positive trend has been officially acknowledged by the IUCN, which resulted in the mountain gorilla’s status being upgraded from "critically endangered" to "endangered" in 2018.
Spanning 7,800 square kilometers (or 3,000 square miles), Virunga National Park boasts an incredibly diverse landscape, featuring active volcanoes, expansive lakes, lush rainforests, and towering mountains.
