Now, a groundbreaking study led by Sarah Bäumler has unveiled a hidden structure that could revolutionize our understanding of this iconic location. A Harbour Basin Revealed
The researchers employed innovative techniques, including electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity tomography, and shear-wave seismic measurements, to penetrate the thick sediment cover that has concealed Olympia's secrets for centuries. Despite the dense olive groves that complicated data collection, their efforts paid off. They uncovered a rectangular basin measuring approximately 80 by 100 meters, located south of the excavated sanctuary.
This basin, with its limnic sediments and freshwater environment, suggests a possible harbour basin. The radiocarbon data places the limnic conditions from the fifth century BC to the sixth century AD, coinciding with the peak of the Panhellenic Games, a period of immense significance in Greek history.
Unraveling the Purpose
The study's authors evaluated various possibilities for the basin's purpose. Initially, they considered a bath complex or a wastewater basin, but sedimentological and biomarker analyses ruled these out. Instead, the basin's orientation, aligning with the Leonidaion and the southwestern bath, hints at a connection to the broader sanctuary.
This discovery challenges the long-held theory that goods reached Olympia from a harbour at Pheia. Instead, it suggests that a harbour at Olympia itself could have been a logistical necessity, given the scale of the Games. The study also traced the course of the levee containing the Kladeos wall, a flood barrier, which runs in a nearly straight north-south line toward the present terrace edge. This finding underscores the potential for many more hidden structures at ancient Olympia, waiting to be uncovered.
